Question: How common is it with ethnic rhinoplasty for someone to want a nose that essentially erases their identity? Can a very ethnic nose be made fully Westernized?
Answer: Occasionally, we have patients that present in the office with desires for a rhinoplasty from an entirely different ethnic group. Patients may very well bring photographs in. I think this can be a significant mistake for those who want to maintain ethnic pride and, in addition, the nose needs to harmonize with the rest of the face. Michael Jackson was an obvious example of an African American young man who had a nose that didn’t fit his face. Therefore, even if it is possible to significantly westernize the nose, I think it is often ill-advised.
