It is understandable that one would be nervous about a foreign substance being implanted through a surgical procedure, but facial implants have been a common part of surgery for many years with very few post-operative problems. Chin implants are made of a variety of substances including silicone or polyethylene. We prefer solid silicone implants, as they have the most favorable long-term results. Solid silicone implants, unlike the gel implants affiliated with breast implants in years gone by, have been used since at least the 1950s. A solid silicone rubber is well-tolerated by the body and is used in many areas of surgery. For example it has been used as a covering over neuro-surgical or cardiac devices. The body has very little reaction to this substance, so the amount of swelling/inflammation in a chin implant is minimal. The composition of the implant provides a stable, long-term shape which provides predictable results. When you are seen in consultation, we can provide numerous pictures of patients who have had these implants, and we can actually show you examples of the material.
