Many people are dissatisfied with their looks but some, in particular those with a very large or very small chin, feel as if their face is out of balance. A prominent or receding chin can be a source of self-consciousness for some because of the way others perceive them. We have often heard the expression, “Oh, he’s a weak-chinned guy”, or something of that sort. It is not a compliment; however, a chin augmentation procedure can help.
Having a chiselled chin makes the face more balanced and gives the appearance of a symmetrical facial structure. The chin augmentation procedure is done using silicone or Medpor implants placed under the skin. This gives more prominence to a receding chin line. In some cases, the chin bone is moved forward, giving a solid base to the face.
If the chin is too prominent, the bone can be moved back or it can be lessened by filing the bone. Liposuction can also be used to remove fat around the lower cheek and chin areas. After successful chin augmentation surgery, the patient’s profile will be more balanced and more sculpted. Often rhinoplasty (nose surgery), is done at the same time if the nose is out of proportion with the new chin line.
The surgery for chin augmentation takes approximately forty-five minutes and is a simple procedure. This makes it easier to do additional facial surgery at the same time if desire, thus saving the patient from undergoing two separate treatments. The result of the chin surgery is permanent, which is another plus for this procedure.
After surgery, a special dressing will be kept over the chin for two days. Because anesthesia and implants are used, the chin might have a slight tingling sensation and the nerves that were affected during surgery may make the chin feel numb until it heals completely. The great part is that you will not have a visible scar on your chin.
