Question: How do you check up on a surgeon who you’re considering for facelift surgery? Is there anywhere out there where you can check credentials, malpractice suits, etc.?
Answer: Your question regarding reviewing a surgeon’s credentials is very reasonable and appropriate. I would recommend a couple of steps for you. First, you can check with the state licensing board about malpractice suits that were won as this is public information. I think it is also reasonable to make an appointment to visit with prospective surgeons, and if you’re comfortable about scheduling consultations with more than one surgeon to see if their thoughts for your surgery resonate with your interest you should do that. In addition, it is the time you can directly ask the surgeon how frequently he performs facial surgery and if he’s ever had litigation regarding this type of surgery. That is not uncommon query in our office. We never had any litigation for facial surgery, and facial surgery is a very common procedure in our office and I’ve taught courses about current techniques in face lifting.
